Following the success of our day time classes at Art Shop and Pottery, we are now able to offer evening classes for those who would like to try oil painting for the first time or would like to refresh their oil painting skills.

No previous art experience is necessary.  

In order to get the most from the classes you will need the following items 


Nylon brushes, no.1 round, no.6 round and no.10 flat 
Mixing palette
Good quality artist’s oil paint (i.e Michael Harding 40ml tubes) in 

Titanium White, Ultramarine blue, Magenta or Crimson red, Bright Yellow Lake or Cadmium Lemon Yellow
Purified Linseed Oil

All the above are available to buy here in the shop and 10% discount will apply to course participants.

Please also bring a lint free cloth or kitchen roll and a small jam jar with secure lid. 

Materials provided in the studio - oil painting paper and canvas board for lessons 1-5, brush cleaner.

Recommended additional purchases for use at home - cleaning solvents i.e Zest-it odourless cleaner, turpentine or white spirit, oil painting sketchpad, boards and canvases, oil based picture glaze.

Lesson 1 

Handling oil paint and learning to combine colours.

The use of linseed oil as medium.

Cleaning equipment with solvents.

Painting a colour clock, which can be used for future reference in colour mixing.

Lesson 2

The focus is on colour contrast and separation.

This will involve painting an abstract composition based around a series of concentric shapes. The emphasis of this exercise is making decisions about where colours are placed for optimum effect and keeping colours clean.

Lesson 3

Painting a close up of a natural form (vegetable,fruit or flower) and learning blending and shading techniques

This exercise puts into practise the use of colour mixing to achieve a three dimensional shape combined with close observational study.

Lesson 4

Planning a still life composition from a studio set up, beginning with first layers of colour.

This week we look at how to build an interesting picture by using what we see in front of us and a studying some traditional techniques.

Depending on personal choice, the outcome can be planned as figurative or more abstract.

Continuing with painting from previous week 

Working on the next layers of colour and achieving the visual interest of depth and distance.

Lesson 6

Completing any previously unfinished work or planning a new composition to complete at home.

One to one Lessons with Gillian
If you are an absolute beginner at painting or just want to try a new technique, we offer ​1-1  and small group painting lessons in oil, acrylic and watercolour. The hourly tutored adult rate is £20 ( children 6-16 £15 ph )with you providing your own materials. Adult two hour lessons are £30 (£15ph ).This is payable at the time of booking. We are always happy to advise on the products you will need and our students receive a 10% discount on materials bought for the sessions. 

Beginners and returners to painting are welcome, as are children from age 7 upwards.
